Timeline Family Project

Our next family project is here!  (I love these things!!!)  Guidelines went home this last week and the project is due on or before February 13th.

Please help your child make a timeline of his/her life.  It should have at least 5 or 6 events in his/her life.  Examples are:

-birth
-first tooth
-started walking
-birthdays/holidays
-first trip
-kindergarten graduation
-birth of a new sibling
-moving to a new home

Label and place pictures on the timeline in order of events.  The timeline will be on display for the month of February and then will be returned home.  You may be as creative as you want but please remember, this is NOT a collage, it is a timeline.  (See the guidelines for specific examples.)

If you do not have pictures, you may draw or print things that will fit for each event.  Please make sure your child is doing the work on this activity though...

This is a required project which will be graded and entered on your child’s report card.  It is necessary that your student is totally involved with this timeline due to the fact that it is a 1st grade AZ social studies standard.  It can be a fun keepsake, so get creative and get your little one to work!  Be sure to ask if you have any questions.

First Grade Science

Below is a link to an article about what to expect from first grade science.  In the past I have not felt like I have had the materials to fully meet the current standards, so I set up some projects on Donors Choose to help our classroom have better science materials.  Because those projects were funded, our class now has the materials we need to have the types of science experiences this article is talking about!  Be sure to ask your child about what we have been working on in class!

Flu and Strep Season

Influenza and strep are a fact of life during the school year. We are confident neither of these viruses will disrupt the school year if we work together to control them.

Teach your children to wash their hands often. Washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is ideal (roughly the time it takes to sing the Happy Birthday song twice).

Teach your children to keep their hands away from their faces and to avoid touching their mouth, nose, or eyes.

Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues or the inside of an elbow. Cough or sneeze into sleeves—not hands!

Help children learn these healthy habits by setting a good example yourself.

If your child becomes ill during the school day, it is important we know how to reach you. Please remember to give your up-to-date contact information to us. Be sure to inform the health office if your child has a chronic health condition, such as asthma or diabetes.
Please monitor your children daily for cough or sore throat.  If either exists, check temperature with a thermometer for fever greater than 100°F.  Other possible symptoms are runny nose, lethargy, loss of appetite, and in some cases, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
DO NOT SEND CHILDREN TO SCHOOL IF THEY ARE SICK! Sick children should stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing drugs.
Please note that recent strep cases have not presented in the usual way. Some students just have a sore throat, others just have a fever. As a precaution, we recommend strep tests for any student presenting these symptoms. Left untreated, strep could develop into Scarlet Fever.
If your child develops these symptoms during the school day, health office personnel will notify you to pick them up from school. Students need to be picked up within an hour of notification. Children staying home with flu-like symptoms should also avoid contact with others except to get medical care.
Never bring a sick child into the front office or classrooms. Sign-out your student before picking them up from the health office. If you need to go into classrooms to pick-up other students or collect homework, leave your ill child in the health office while you do this.
We have implemented daily cleaning procedures to help combat these viruses.

Re-enrollment forms

Its that time of year again, where we want to know if you are coming back or not next year!  So check your child's folder for their re-enrollment form.  Please fill the form out for all of the children in your family attending this school and return to me (or a teacher of one of your other children...) ASAP.  If you turn the forms in to me, I will make sure to get a copy of the form to your other child's teacher so they have one as well.  Forms are due ASAP as there is a wait list and slots will be filled soon!

Happy New Year!

We are happy to be back and are hitting the ground running!  We have so much to learn and do!  Please continue to check folders as there is still old work coming home as well as information about our new activities.  Also, be sure to see me if you would like to schedule a conference.  I would be happy to meet, but most times have to have advance notice.

Watch for future updates on spelling, activities, calendar events, and other announcements coming soon to our blog!
