Read to Feed
Our class recently had some social studies lessons covering some of our standards about other countries in the world and being a good citizen. Along with those lessons we decided to do the Read to Feed program with a charitable organization called Heifer International. (Check out their website at www.heifer.org for more information). Below is a brief explanation of the Read to Feed program from the website. We also sent home bright green fliers with all the information last week. Please fill out the participation letter and send it back ASAP. Then record the books your child reads on the special book logs being sent home. We will finish the program in 3 weeks. Then we'll collect the money and donate it to help families in other countries learn to become self-sufficient. Be sure to let me know if there are any questions!
"Read to Feed is a reading incentive service-learning program that offers global education opportunities and will foster in your children a love for reading, a passion to help others and a way to help create a better world.
Children get sponsors for each book they read during a 4 week period. At the end of the program, the group pools its funds and donates them to Heifer International to help Heifer assist millions of families around the world feed their families and reach self-reliance through the gifts of livestock and training.
The Read to Feed program encourages reading skills, while teaching students how they can empower families around the world with the gift of livestock, heightening awareness that their actions are making a difference in the lives of others."
